How to take care of your glass roof lantern
September 21, 2020
It's important to take care of your glass roof lantern once it's been installed to ensure you get the most out of it. Windows can get so dirty, and it's important to clean them regularly to highlight its stunning features. As it is, they are very low maintenance and don't require much upkeep but cleaning them once in a while is needed just to freshen them up a little!
Don't forget, your glass roof lantern is there to serve a purpose; not only is it a feature to your home, but also to provide natural lighting. So, let it do exactly that! Below, we're going to highlight the best ways to clean a roof lantern and how important it is to generally check them for damages.
Checking your glass
Damaging glass is so easy – think of all those wine glasses you've dropped after one too many and it shattered into pieces! Well, it's the same for a roof lantern. Damage can occur easily due to extreme weather conditions, such as when it's windy or rainy. You should check to see whether the glass is damaged or chipped by inspecting the appearance of the roof lantern. As simple as it is, check the corners of it, as this is often where cracks can begin to form and ripple inwards towards the centre of the glass.
Cleaning
We recommend using a non-abrasive sponge with some lukewarm, soapy water and a microfibre cloth to use after the window has dried. Once your sponge has dried, dampen it and clean from the top of the lantern down, ensuring there are no streaks (water marks are never great!). Make sure that when you're cleaning your roof lantern that you take extra care. If possible, clean the window whilst someone else is there to guide you in both cleaning and positioning yourself. The last thing you want to do is trip and fall!
Cleaning doesn't just mean the windows themselves. Cobwebs and loose dirt can build up within the glass roof lantern, and it's important these aren't visible otherwise you'll lose the aesthetic of the feature. Simply buying an extended feather duster will do the job.
Warranty
At Aliwood, our glass roof lanterns come with a 5-year warranty for labour and 10-year warranty for parts. Therefore, if any damage were to happen, you'd be covered! That's not to say that all suppliers of roof lanterns offer the same, so as a heads up, ensure you check their policies in regard to any cover!
It might not be the best idea to climb up on your roof lantern if you're afraid of heights. Make sure if you do go ahead with cleaning your glass roof lantern yourself that you take extra care or better, hire a professional. A well-maintained roof lantern should be shining, and if you leave it to build dirt and muck, it won't have the impact that it was designed to. They are a talking point of any household, whether that be because of the amount of natural light it brings to a home or the aesthetic.
